I'm a poet.
And because I'm a poet,
I have the pride of a poet,
and the background of an artist.

Yes as a poet.
I am overlooked in the group
for the work that is drawn,
and the art that is colored by the painters

I am a writer
and though my words hold power
they are seen as nothing more than words
and never get brought to their original intent

I am a writer
whose every move is watched
whose art is critiqued harsher than others
who's still unknown as an artist

I am an author,
who wears my heart on my sleeve
who leaves everything bare to judgment
who never asks for more than is due

I am an artist,
but I don't always get treated as such
It's hard for other authors and writers to be known in the world as true artists. A well known complaint of the literature community here on DA.

I agree with your general sentiment, but maybe you don't get as much recognition because this "poem" is basically just a normal paragraph broken into lines instead of using punctuation. There's not much imagination in it and it doesn't read like poetry. It's like you had a thought, wrote it down in the most simple and readily available words you could muster, and then went back and hit enter a lot.

I really like the lines
"I am a writer
and though my words hold power
they are seen as nothing more than words
and never get brought to their original intent"
I'm a writer too and understand the power of words

Those ones are powerful indeed.

I must agree with you. When people think of art, they think of physical pictures or sculptures. Writers ar always sadly forgotten. :depressed:
This poem really opens others eyes. I love it.

It's unfortunate, but some people have a narrow definition of art that typically encompasses just the visual and musical arts. :(

' a great poet, a truly great poet is the most unpoetical of all creatures'
poetry isn't dead, it's merely evolving. For example, rap - an acronym for rhythm and poetry - and it's actually rather popular.

However, since poetry requires imagination to be truly appreciated, it tends to be overlooked. where with an excellent painting, viewers will be moved to say 'oh, it's so pretty!' but with a poem all they see is a wall of text so the reaction is more 'uh... cool story, bro'
